AIB Farm

AIB has developed and commercialized the lowest cost photo bioreactor (PBR) technology to grow microalgae benchmarked to be at the most 20% of the cost of the lowest cost PBR’s found anywhere else. These can grow all the hundreds of thousands of microalgae species for thousands of products.

This has been combined with the all 45 essentials which is the most complete food available to achieve our mission for the planet, people and all life.

Ours is a technology based movement for good with the clear objective to develop numerous projects around the world as fast as possible.

AIB’s two major innovations are based on the production system of microalgae and all the 45 food essentials being supplied in one powder and the 5 game changers are:

  • Microalgae have a very large genetic base. The latest estimate indicates there are about five times more microalgae species on earth than there are plant species. So we can get much more molecules from microalgae for food, pharmaceuticals, fuel, cosmetics and consumer needs than from all of plants.
  • Microalgae grow very fast, therefore we could in theory get all the biomass we need from about 1% of the global agricultural land. 99% could go back to nature, tremendously improving climate resilience.
  • Microalgae is the best future food – this declaration was made by United Nations in 1974, in their World Food Conference.

For microalgae to take off two more power packed breakthroughs have been achieved by AIB. Microalgae have a multi Trillion USD potential but the industry is stunted and is tiny in the low billion USD range. The fundamental block to the growth of microalgae was and is the growing system and a way to incorporate them into current practices.

Almost all microalgae are grown in raceway ponds which have two very major limitations:

  • Raceway pond produce is not clean. Microalgae are super healthy, so all types of life come into the ponds. Being microscopic, microalgae are difficult to clean.
  • Raceway ponds are open. So if we grow species A, species B, C, D and many more will start growing as well.

Hence only those species which require unusual conditions like spirulina at Ph. 10, can be grown in ponds. There are only a dozen or so species which can be grown in raceway ponds out of hundreds of thousands of species. So raceway ponds only grow about 0.0012% of the available species, which is no solution.

Floating Bed Method

To grow the vast bulk of the species a closed system is needed. However, closed microalgae production systems were way too expensive prior to 2006. So our CEO, Jag set out to develop low cost closed systems. Jag’s first patent was published by WIPO on the 4th of Sept 2008. It was such a sensation! For the first time a low cost closed system – Photo Bio Reactor (PBR) was disclosed. Most major research groups rushed to try it out including NASA and the Weismann Institute of Israel. Please see our technology document attached.

It’s very difficult to believe or imagine the extraordinary low cost AIB has achieved for a PBR system compared to all others – low enough to make microalgae competitive with current agriculture. To illustrate, attached is a 2011 paper which in part says, “The costs of photo-bioreactors with individual medium and air filters are about $12,000 and $8000 for 8000 L and 1000 L bioreactors respectively.” The key point of our latest photo-bioreactor systems are that on the basis of cost per M3 of growth media, our costs are less than 1/5th of the lower of the two costs stated in the attached 2011 paper.

In essence, we believe that our PBR system can produce algal biomass competitive with most basic products from agriculture including protein powders.  This fact that a low cost PBR system is finally available is the fourth power packed reason the microalgae industry is poised to take off.

Algae International’s innovation’s breakthrough in producing clean and cheap microalgae for food has overcome some critical barriers:

  1. The microalgae industry globally has been stunted with the global market in low tens of billions of USD while their potential is in the several trillions of USD due to the raceway ponds being able to only grow a dozen or so species. With perhaps a million or so species of microalgae, raceway ponds can only grow about 0.0012% of the available species. Photo-bioreactor (PBR) systems, which can grow most of the microalgae species and open up this vast treasure have been too expensive to use. This is what we have changed, we have dropped the capital cost of PBR’s to about 20% of other lowest cost PBR systems benchmarked. That capital cost is low enough to open the door to the massive treasure of microalgae to kick-start a gold rush to microalgae.
  2. Our photo-bioreactor are closed systems and can be set up in open fields using sun’s energy and light to reproduce rapidly, thereby saving lots of cost in energy.
  3. Our photo-bioreactor produces clean mono-culture microalgae, for all manner of nutritious food, pharmaceuticals and biomaterials for products like cosmetics, face creams and more.
  4. Our total production system is cheap to start-up and the photo-bioreactor can be replicated or transported easily to begin the microalgae production in any part of the globe.
  5. The AIB PBR system of growing microalgae is excellent for growing them in desert areas thus greening them using sea water.
